Finally, an IT Roadmap…

The overall benefit provided by VAiLPLEX is a clear IT direction and strategy based on your unique business requirements and empirical data. This is not the normal ‘cookie-cutter’ solution. Let BRUNS-PAK demonstrate the power of VAiLPLEX with a Proof-of-Concept installation at your site.

How to accurately model expected Cloud Capacity & Network Bandwidth Fee’s & Charges

VAiLPLEX provides an ability to visually model the required target capacity (CPU, memory, disk, etc) and the network utilization required for both the preparation for the move (server/data replication, etc) as well as the workloads that will converse back to the original site until the completion of the move series. If a very chatty workload will be split across sites, the impact of this to the end-user (latency) as well as the network bandwidth capacity this will require must be understood.

Site-to-Site Module An optional ‘Site-to-Site’ module within VAiLPLEX allows any visual component diagram to calculate the expected network loads that would consume bandwidth is they were to be relocated to the new site. Simply drag an icon to the right of the site-to-site bar, and the capacity needed to support that workload is calculated for you. An example of this is shown in the first diagram to the left.

Move Bundle/Workload Network Impact The VAiLPLEX Metrics Collector allows the size for each move bundle to be calculated. For workloads to be relocated, ‘T-Minus’ (Preparation) tasks to replicate data to the new site will consume network bandwidth. Once the workloads are moved to the new site, some activity may need to communicate back to the original site until all moves for that workload have been completed. The combination of the replication workloads for preparation tasks and the communication between sites for the ‘Business as Usual’ (BAU) workloads needs to be understood and accounted for.

Map the Modeled Network Loads to the Actual Capacity

The diagram to the left indicates that with the planned network loads to replicate servers as part of T-Minus plus the loads needed for post-migration processing that the network bandwidth either planned for or that exists currently will be exceeded approximately half-way through the migration project. By restructuring the move group bundles it is possible to ensure the workloads will fit within the bandwidth available (next diagram). These diagrams are provided as part of the Sandpiper Relocation Services using information from the VAiLPLEX appliances.

The Migration ‘Bell Curve’

What can easily be seen in this analysis model is the workloads across the network will increase as more data is replicated to the new site and more workloads are started that still converse back to the original site. This network load will increase until a ‘tipping-point’ is reached, where we actually have more workloads now moved to the new site and the amount of load back to the original site starts to decrease, until the migration project completes.

VAiLPLEX Addresses Many More Migration/Transition Requirements

As you may imagine, there are numerous other aspects regarding application mapping, transition/move group/bundle creation, migration method selection, testing & validation as well as the actual transition execution. Please contact us for more information on any of these topics or for other operational or Disaster Recovery validation techniques that can be addressed using the VAiLPLEX solution.

How to License VAiPLEX

Sandpiper provides this solution either as a stand-alone appliance or we can provide it as SaaS (‘Software as a Service’), or a subscription-based service. If you require assistance with the setup, discovery, metric ingest, configuration or management of the process, these can all be included by Sandpiper as part of your project.
